HokoMe Safety & Scam Guidance

Practical steps for safer buying, selling and property enquiries on HokoMe.

Current version: 2 September 2026

Pause when something feels wrong

Scammers often create urgency, move a conversation away from HokoMe, ask for unusual payment methods, or promise something that seems too good to be true. Take your time and independently verify the person, listing and arrangement before you proceed.

If you feel threatened or unsafe, end the interaction. For an immediate danger or crime in New Zealand, call 111. For non-emergency Police assistance, use 105.

Buying and collecting safely

  • Inspect the item, vehicle or property information carefully and ask direct questions about condition, ownership and availability.
  • Meet in a sensible public or well-known place when appropriate, and consider taking someone with you for higher-value collections.
  • Do not share passwords, verification codes, bank logins or identity documents because another member asks for them.
  • Be cautious of requests to pay before you can verify the listing or of links that do not belong to HokoMe or your trusted bank.

Selling safely

  • Keep your listing accurate and do not hand over an item until you are satisfied with the arrangement.
  • Do not accept screenshots, unusual overpayments or third-party collection stories as proof that an arrangement is safe.
  • Keep sensitive personal details out of your public listing and use care before sharing a home address or documents.

Property enquiry safety

Treat a Property listing as information to investigate, not a substitute for inspections or professional advice. Confirm the person you are dealing with and the property details independently before sharing sensitive information, paying money, signing documents or attending a viewing.

Report concerns

If you suspect a scam, unsafe listing, stolen goods or policy breach, keep relevant details and contact HokoMe support. If personal information or money may be at risk, contact your bank or relevant provider as soon as possible.
